What is a Doula?

The word doula is an old Greek word which means woman servant and usually referring to
the labour doula.
Types of Doulas?

- postpartum doula.
What is the role of a Doula?
- provide information during pregnancy and the baby's arrival
- provides prenatal education and childbirth preparation
- assist in the preparation of a realistic birth plan
- provides telephone contact 24/7...
- provides friendly ear to listen to any concerns and to answer any questions you may have
How does a Doula help during the labour and delivery process?
- helps you execute your birth plan
- provides continues support and presence during labour
- practices comfort measures, relaxation and massage
- assists with position changes
- encourages participation from the partner and offers reassurance
- acts as an advocate for the mother
What if my doctor doesn't like Doulas?
- Despite the well-documented health and emotional benefits of continuous labour support
by a non-medical, unrelated person, some doctors don't like Doulas. This is very rare and
most likely due to the doctor not understanding a Doula's role and scope of practice. If
you want Doula support during your labour and your doctor does not seem supportive of
Doulas, ask your Doula to provide you with a handout explaining what it is that Doulas do.
